Lot 40 Probably Experimental Unmarked Breechloading Rifle
Probably Experimental Unmarked Breechloading Cartridge Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .44 RF cal., 22'' round barrel; dovetailed steel blade front sight, two-leaf adjustable rear sight. Bronze (or brass) frame; double set triggers. Serpentine steel combination triggerguard/operating lever simultaneously drops breech open and moves fired cartridge rearward and up for ejection; cartridges are then fed forward via coil spring pressure from a longitudinal magazine in buttstock. Varnished artificially tiger-striped walnut stock; steel buttplate has a knurled brass knob which unscrews to insert cartridges into magazine. Condition is very good to fine, with smooth metal having a very light age patina, likely having been originally finished in the white. Stock retains most original varnish, with minor dings and scratches. Action is smooth; bore is shiny with sharp rifling. Rifle shows professional workmanship and very possibly is one-of-a-kind. Est.: $1,800-$2,400. (Antique)
